Glenc, enjoyed the article, saw alot of people around me in those two stories you mentioned, then i read about the lady you just mentioned, did you help her out of her misery?
If you think about it, the internet is still a new place for alot of people, so there's a hug Misinformation and a lack of education about it, the only education you would get about the internet is that there are alot of paedophiles on the net out to get out. i know this as i hear it all the time from my folks, who by the way ask me to help them out with the internet and any computer related issue.

One of the real problems with this demographic is that, once they learn a method of doing something, they will repeat it endlessly rather than learn another way. I've actually had one person want to show me something on Yahoo!—she very carefully went to www.google.com, typed in Yahoo!, clicked the first link in the results, and then proceeded to navigate the site. She told me that one of her kids or grandkids had taught her to "always use Google," so that's what she did. She made no distinction between a search box and the URL bar; to her, they were just regions of the screen where she could tell the computer where to go.

"Many of them do not know what a URL is, nor what a search engine is."

True! But...

" There’s a reason that the most common search query at Yahoo! is “Google,” and the most common search query at Google is “Yahoo.”"

The above has absolutely nothing (okay, maybe just very little) to do with item 1. The real reason for this seemingly high statistic is that even I will use the URL bar and "keywords" to go to websites I frequent simply becase I know it will be the #1 return on any search engine and usually I would use "I'm feeling lucky" on it if there existed a keyboard shortcut for that. Only Google Chrome (in my experience) integrates the search engine into the URI entry field smoothly so that with only 1 extra keypress I can go to the URL I want instead of letting it go to the default SE (Google or Yahoo for most of us, maybe a few BINGers out there too). The WWW and .COM are really quite antiquated these days... a vestigil part of a much more freeform "world-wide-web' ;)

My demographic is of course skewing my perspective! 25-30 YO male, non-SilcoValley, aerospace & computer engineer.

That's actually a much better way of handling it. IMHO they made a serious mistake by announcing it with great fanfare, telling everyone it was available, and then having it effectively appear broken by not showing the "Check In" button.

As an alternative, we may want to consider that the iPhone is a phone, and that our definition of a phone has changed. Perhaps today's phone is a device in which you can enter the letter A and the letter B and tell the difference between the two, and that any device that can't do this is not a phone (in the same way that anything with vacuum tubes and real bugs is not a computer).

I have a theory that, for people for whom using the telephone functions is a high priority, they will not be happy with the iPhone/AT&T. For people for whom the phone is just a platform, they'll be better off with iPhone (for now—as Louis says, the ecosystems are equalizing, though they're really nowhere near equal at the moment). The iPad is seriously tempting, mainly because of the battery life. But the thing about the iPhone is that it's always present. I use my iPhone as a GPS in my car; I can't imagine doing that with the iPad, just because of the size of it.

It's all about how much pain you can stand with cellphone carriers. Lived in Atlanta for years and AT&T (then Cingular) was notorious for delivering voicemail notifications days late. Switched to Sprint and things were near perfect. Moved to Charleston, SC and Sprint was notorious for delivering voicemail notifications days late. Switched back to AT&T and life was good again. And, yes, AT&T's MicroCell is a godsend! Bottom line: Wouldn't trade my Nexus One or iPad for anything. For what Scoble does, I can't believe he hasn't switched to an iPad. I could never do what he does on an iPhone, and I don't much like doing it on the Nexus One either. Really prefer something that more closely resembles a full-function computer but is still totally mobile. As of today, the iPad is the only game in town, but I can't wait to see the Android offerings.

The issue of AT&T was a major push to make me consider alternatives at first, but it didn't figure as much in the final decision.

The official Skype for Android, sanctioned by Verizon, was so limited I uninstalled it. The single most brain damaged limitation was to only allow Skype calls over 3G and not WiFi. Huh? Even there you can only make international calls. Domestic calls placed with Skype actually use the Verizon voice network instead of Skype.

I tried Fring instead and it did not have those limitations using Skype but it has other idiocy. For instance, it would not work with Bluetooth or the speaker phone function. It also has an extremely obnoxious alert sound that cannot be changed. So I turned it off too.

So... I'm still waiting for a reasonable VOIP over WiFi solution for Android. Having Skype actually be usable would be great but we aren't there yet.
